Penpol Carp Lake

A Carp Fishery near Plymouth now a newly opened syndicate

A new specimen water

Once the decision had been made to turn Penpol Lake into a syndicated specimen water in the summer of 2005, detailed plans were put into place.

These were;

  • October    Drain the lake and remove all fish and remove them to another location. Large fish (over 7lbs) would be returned later.
  • November Re-landscape to add features to the lake bed, including re-building one island, add  two more  and construct a new stock lake.
  • January    Sort fish from the holding lake and return fish over 7lb to Penpol Lake.
  • February   First group of 6 symmo fish arrive from Mark Symmons at Heather Fisheries between 18 and 23lbs.
  • March       Second group of 30 fish from Heather Fisheries arrive, all over 10lb in weight.
  • April         With the help of syndicate members, barked fishing pegs and paths laid and wooden shed with toilet installed.

All hands to work

Once the lake had been drained we were able to net and remove the fish to a holding pond nearby. This was necessary because the lake base was to be re-landscaped and mud stirred up could kill the fish.

Six transfer tanks were used with oxygen pumped into them to minimize stress to the fish.

Small fish were left behind in the holding lake and only the best fish returned.

Re-landscaping work

In order to make Penpol a realy great fishery, major work was carried out to add features to the lake bed .

The existing island was enlarged with a deep channel around it, and two further islands created.

New specimen stock

New introductions of really fast growing fish with huge size potential were introduced from nationally renowned Heather Fisheries run by Mark Symmons.

Six large fish were introduced alongside our own original stock that was in the lake before. These were followed by a further 30 fish that were all over 10lbs in weight.

A new stock lake

Alongside the main lake, a new stock lake was constructed, in order to have a place to put the smaller fish from the main lake.

The plan is to grow these fish on to provide a top up stock for the main lake.

Penpol Lake

Penpol Lake as it is now(2008) from swim 2.

The digger in the above picture was just in front of the swim and as you can see it looks vastly better...

We estimate a total of between a 100-115 fish in the lake at this time.

The original stock of fish that were in the lake are still there and these include some beautiful commons and some stunning linear's. we are hoping that these lean mean fighting machine's will put on some more weight in the not too distant future.

Here's hoping.

Jan 2009 .New construction of peg 9

At the start of the year work began on clearing a path through the woods for access to construct a new peg.

Peg 9."The Hideaway"

In March after much hard work peg 9 was finally finished. This is a beautiful peg with a wide bark path edged by the trees that were felled to make way for the peg. This leads down to the peg itself which is very spacious and gives a good view out across the lake towards both islands. In front and too the sides of the peg holes have been dug and fish will come in close to the boards.

Paths around the lake

Also in March work was finished on the path access to the top end of the lake from the car park.

With some more topping to do, these paths should be fine and are very wide to give easy access.

Welcome to Penpol Lake
